Quebec, Canada
From sophisticated city to picturesque countryside, the sweep of sculpted peaks and the St Lawrence River, Quebec is a chic choice destination. Barren northern climes bordered by the Hudson Straits stand in sharp contrast to the very refined urban centers in the south. Bordered to the west by Ontario, to the east by Newfoundland & Labrador, and to the south by river and the US border, this province is raved about by locals and a favorite with foreign visitors. Proudly touted as a cultural mecca by natives, Montreal, graced with historic architecture and a soothing linguistic mix of French and English, is a refined place apart. In a photogenic blend of past and present, the city proudly proffers a show richly diverse and oh-so civilized. If you ever exhaust your Montreal options, Quebec City, smaller but unforgettably charming, should be high on your agenda. Wander the historic areas of Upper Town and Lower Town, then walk the wall to get a feel for the city before embarking on a tour of important museums and other area highlights. Despite all this urban character, even locals head for the hills eventually to spend some time away from city crush. You might think you’ve stumbled across provincial France as you explore Charlevoix, north of Quebec City. From the mountains to the sweeping fields to the river, this region is a breath of fresh air year-round. When winter snows send skiers shooting off to the slopes, the Laurentians, west and north of Montreal, do brisk business. From the carefully tended runs of Mont-Tremblant to the little villages serving up afternoon refreshment in style - and health spas for the deserving - this region is about relaxation and recreation no matter the outside temperature. For nature at its most majestic, steer for Saguenay River fjord. Whether you’re looking for panoramic landscapes, scenic hikes, whale-watching in season or just a bit of fresh air, try this place on for size. Less traveled than well-known Cape Breton Island, the Gaspe Peninsula is, however, arguably as lovely and a lot less crowded. Hike part of the Appalachian Trail, snap a shot of landmark Rocher Perce and watch for whales at edge of the world in Forillon National Park. Quebec’s appeal lies in a rich range of cultural offerings and accessible natural beauty. A requisite for travel, however, is a slow and easy pace. Don’t rush Quebec and you’ll understand what all the fuss is about.
