New Brunswick, Canada

Map of New Brunswick, Canada

From the dramatic tides and sweeping seascapes along the shores of the Bay of Fundy to the sand dunes and salt marshes of Kouchibouguac National Park and the lengthy course of scenic Saint John River Valley, this eastern province boasts a variety of natural attractions to entertain the discerning visitor.

Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital city, is charming and relaxed. Brush up on New Brunswick history here with a stroll through the city center, or spend an easy afternoon canoeing along the Saint John River before heading to the coast or following the river valley east or west. Mt Carleton Provincial Park, east of the Saint John River Valley in the north, is an off-the-beaten track gem, bustling with wildlife and just generally scenic.

Saint John, this province’s largest city, is central to the Bay of Fundy. New Brunswick’s main port, ferries connect Saint John to Nova Scotia, but passers-through won’t want to miss stopping for seafood and the scenic shores that lie an easy drive away. See the effects of drastic tidal changes on the Saint John River and get an easy education on marine life at the New Brunswick Museum if time permits. Steer west for the peaceful Fundy Isles during summer months, when whales frequent the Bay of Fundy. To the east, find the photo-worthy St Martins and pleasant beach strolls en route to Fundy Bay National Park.

Moncton, east of Fredericton and northeast of Saint John, offers access to sea shore rock formations and the tide pools at Hopewell Rocks. Also find here rail connections to other Canadian provinces. Sample lobster on the road meandering around the contours of Northumberland Strait, then enjoy a range of outdoor pursuits in the lovely Kouchibouguac National Park. Here fresh-water and salt-water ecosystems support a variety of flora and fowl; watch for seals at play in the sand dunes.

Don’t rush through New Brunswick, or you just might miss spectacular shores, picturesque villages and sweeping seascapes.
