Manitoba, Canada
The province of Manitoba is located at the heart of expansive Canada, bordered in the west by Saskatchewan to the east by Ontario. From the sweeping blond of southern wheat fields to the white sand shores of Lake Winnipeg or the urban skyline of Manitoba’s capitol city, Winnipeg, this land ranges from icy winter to friendly sunshine. Winnipeg, the region’s urban center, is a city warmed by cultural offerings no matter the weather. Located at the on the Trans-Canada Highway along the Assiniboine River, Winnipeg bustles with activity year-round. West of Winnipeg, the sand dunes at Spruce Woods Provincial Park are an unexpected change in scenery. A quick drive away is Brandon, Manitoba’s second-largest city. Spend an afternoon exploring the local attractions before heading north to Riding Mountain National Park and miles of hiking trails. The road north, Route 6, penetrates the province as far as Thompson, a good 474 miles from Winnipeg. From here, trains run to remote Manitoba. In the far north, the icy waters of Hudson Bay wash the shores of historic settlement Churchill, a small town frequented by polar bears, beluga whales and often lit by a bright northern lights show. While many visitors may not have the time to penetrate the beauties of Manitoba’s wild side, the more accessible attractions reward with well-rounded entertainment options.
