Alberta, Canada

Map of Alberta, Canada Canada’s wide prairie province Alberta is bordered to the west by the lofty Rocky Mountains and stretches off to Saskatchewan in the east. Home to big cities Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta is a haven for outdoors enthusiasts, travelers after urban bright lights and visitors just passin’ through. An easy hop up from northern Montana, the Canadian side of Glacier National Park, and national natural gems, Banff and Jasper, Alberta doesn’t want for photogenic assets or easy access.

Banff and Jasper National Parks are in a category that defies provincial description. The scenery is just an added bonus for time on the slopes at the three main ski areas in this part of the Canadian Rockies. Nature lovers making the trip in cold winter months can bound off on cross-country ski trails for miles of pristine snow pack and the crystal beauty of frozen Lake Louise. Summer washes the craggy range in sunshine and serves as summons for all the hikers/campers/canoers/anglers/bikers in an extended radius.

Edmonton, Alberta’s northernmost urban center, is within striking range of the Rockies on the north-south route up from Montana. With plenty of museums to compliment any cultural agenda, the city is also home to the world’s largest shopping mall. Complete with water park, this is one shopping trip that is sure to keep the entire family content.

Red Deer, half-way between Calgary and Edmonton, is a pleasant agricultural mid-sized city. An easy stopping- off point for through traffic, Red Deer offers access to some of Alberta’s top attractions.

Calgary has the feel of modern Europe close to the Rockies. Depending on the season, find a range of snow sports – from skiing to bobsleigh – close to hand, and during the summer, leafy green parks and sidewalk cafes.

But a short drive from the US border, Lethbridge has a range of food and lodging options. Get time on the water at Waterton Lakes National Park to the south along with some stunning scenery before continuing your Canadian tour.

Medicine Hat is the last main stop along the southernmost road from Alberta to Regina, Saskatchewan. The province’s sunniest city, Medicine Hat is also home to the world’s tallest teepee. Stop and tour a period prairie farm for a dose of Medicine Hat history.

Alberta ranges from wide open spaces to craggy, mountainous folds. Whether you’re seeking bright lights or the play of sun on snowy peaks, Alberta merits an extensive tour.
